Hi Reader

This is Dave from learn-spanish-program.com

Here is another Spanish lesson.

Learn how to improve your Spanish memorization skills. You will find all the memory techniques you need in my books as well as the software to practice these techniques. The edge that the link-word technique has is how a Spanish word is linked to an English word by using matching sounds between the words.

Let me give you an example on how to use these techniques.

English word = nut Spanish word = nuez

Try to imagine today’s NEWSpaper showing a picture of hundreds of NUTs running around the city.

A silly scenario, but it causes your mind to remember the words. It does not even have to be exact. Focus on the sounds created when pronouncing Spanish words, for it is the key to the link word technique.

The Official “Ask Dave” Section

Question

Dave,

What is the best way to converse with native Spanish speakers in public? Learning Spanish in school is different from speaking to a native Spanish speaker in public. The dialect differs or some use slang. I’m somewhat intimidate by the professional speakers.

novice Spanish student,

Fredell

Answer

Hola Fredell,

What I recommend is going to your complete Visual Link Spanish(TM) course and practice a few greetings until you have them down pat. Then you can tell anyone “Soy estudiante de español, ¿Puede ayudarme con mi español?” [soy es-too-dyahn-teh deh es-pahn-yohl ¿Pweh-theh ah-you-thar-meh con me es-pahn-yohl?] (I’m a Spanish student, can you help me with my Spanish? Next, I would choose 3-4 questions from the course (For example - ¿Qué le gusta hacer? - What do you like to do?), then I would use the “Comprehending Native Speakers” section to help work through the answers they give you.

Gracias,

Dave

Culture Right in the streets

This week, I’m going to talk about a distinct cultural difference in Latin America. I am letting you know about this difference to help you avoid getting offended and so you’ll know how to avoid it.

Anyway, it is very common to see men “take care of business” right in the streets. Fortunately, they usually aren’t blatant about it; they generally turn so most of the public can’t see them, but they urinate (pee) right in the streets. I understand this is done in a few parts of the U.S., parts of Europe, and a few other parts of the world — those of you from other regions, please let me know if I’m wrong (or right).

This was a little shocking for me the first time I realized what was happening. Where I’m from, people just don’t do that. I can truly say that this is one cultural trait that I have never wanted to adopt or try.

When I was living in Latin America, something happened that I will never forget. I was in a small to mid-sized city that had a large main street with an island that ran down the middle of the street. The island was beautifully landscaped with plants and trees. Towards the center of the city, in the middle of the island was a large sign that read “SHOW YOUR CULTURE, DON’T PEE IN THE STREETS!!” . . . Can you imagine a sign like that in your hometown?!

When I saw the sign, I began to laugh. I could imagine a city council meeting together to discover ways to improve the reputation of their city. What they came up with was a sign that advertises to the world that people in their city pee in their streets and that they are trying to cut back!

I wanted to let you know about this so you wouldn’t be as culturally shocked as I was the first time I saw this distinct cultural difference. The next time you are in the streets of Latin America, if you see a man turned away, standing in the same spot, you now know what he is probably doing and can now turn away if it offends you.

Sneak Peak at Next Week: “I Need a Pair of Pants!

¡Hasta luego! (”Until later”)

David S. Clark — President / Director Visual Link Spanish(TM) Fun, Interactive Spanish Courses http://www.learnspanishtoday.com dave_c@learnspanishtoday.com (C)2008 U.S. Institute of Languages 1893 East Skyline Drive Ste. 105 Ogden, UT 84403 1-866-977-2647

Hola Reader,

In this email, I am going to cover the following:

1. Status with download information for the first of eight teleclasses. 2. Tip for learning Spanish for anyone living in a Spanish-speaking country

1. STATUS WITH DOWNLOAD LINK FOR THE TELECLASS

Wednesday night, we had our first of eight LIVE interactive teleclasses for the people who purchased the Verbarrator during the pre-launch.

The first class covered the Present Tense.

Only the people who purchased the Verbarrtor during the pre-launch were able to attend LIVE. The service that we used for the teleclass also has a feature that allowed the students to submt their questions to Pamela (our instructor) before the class AND during the class in real time.

I want to make the recording of the class available to everyone because I think Pamela gave some very helpful information about conjugating Spanish verbs in the present tense.

Our programmer is preparing a web page where everyone can download a recording of the class and I should have that ready for you by Monday.

2. TIP FOR LEARNING SPANISH FOR ANYONE LIVING IN A SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRY

A few days ago, I received an interesting email from a reader:

“Hola Patrick, I live in Mexico and I am an English professor here. Most of my friends are native English-speakers who teach English here in Mexico. My wife is also an American who teaches English here in Mexico. So even though I live in Mexico I don’t have as many opportunities to speak the language as most people would think. When it comes to Spanish grammar, I consider myself on a very advanced level. But I’d like to improve my Spanish conversational skills. I consider myself too advanced to take Spanish classes. Do you have any suggestions?”

One way to improve your Spanish speaking skills is to interact with two (2) or more native Spanish speakers. That way, you will hear not only how they speak to you — but also how they speak to each other.

Sometimes Spanish-speakers will speak to someone who is learning Spanish different from the way they’d speak to a native Spanish speaker. I do this all the time when speaking to someone who doesn’t speak English well — for example, when speaking to a tourist in New York who is asking for directions.

Speaking that way may be very helpful for beginners. But for someone on an advanced level or for someone who wants to accelerate their learning, this may not be quite as helpful.

My advice to that reader is to take some kind of group class in Mexico. He needs to interact more with native Spanish speakers.

One thing that I have noticed about Latin America (or at least in Colombia) people tend to watch less television than Gringos (except for the “mujeres” who like to watch the “novelas”). In Medellín, Colombia it is very common for people to take group classes (instead of staying home watching TV). What kind of group classes?

As I mentioned in a previous email, I am taking group classes for Salsa and Merengue dancing. But there are also group classes in Medellín, Colombia for almost any hobby that you can imagine. Here’s a short list:

1. Escuelas de baile (dance) 2. Escuelas de ajedrez (chess) 3. Escuelas de artesanías (arts & crafts) 4. Escuelas de buceo (scuba diving) 5. Escuelas de cine (film) 6. Escuelas de dibujo (drawing) 7. Escuelas de culinaria/cocina/gastronomía (cooking) 8. Escuelas de pintura (painting) 9. Escuelas de yoga (yoga) 10. Escuelas de yudo (judo) 11. Escuelas de patinaje (skating) 12. Escuelas de fútbol (soccer) 13. Escuelas de fotografía (photography) 14. Escuelas de idiomas (languages) 15. Escuelas de natación (swimming) 16. Escuelas de música (music) 17, Escuelas de joyería (jewelry) 18. Escuelas de masajes (massage) 19. Escuelas de meditación (meditation) 20. Escuelas de tejidos (knitting) 21. Escuelas de tenis (tennis) 22. Escuelas de artes gráficas (graphic arts) 23. Escuelas de artes dramático (dramatic arts) 24. Escuelas de karate (karate) 25. Escuelas de panadería (baking)

Un amigo mío - a friend of mine - here in Medellin recently invited me to check out a very interesting group class that he attends: Jujutsu Brasileño (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)

There’s another way you can interact with groups of native Spanish speakers if you live in Latin America. I am almost too embarrassed to mention this one. That’s because it is one of my New Year’s Resolutions and we are now in March and I have not done anything about it. I am talking about: trabajo voluntario (volunteer work)

Ofrezca sus servicios — offer your services — to a “caridad” (charity) or some chartible cause. Here in Medellín there are opportunities to work with a “hospital infantil” (children’s hospital) and an “orfanato” (orphanage).

Not only is this an effective way to quickly improve your Spanish, but it is also allows us to help charitable causes.

That’s it for today. By the way, if you don’t already have a copy of LSLC Level One here’s the link where you can find out more:

Hi Reader

This is Dave from learn-german-program.com

Here is another German lesson.

Learn how to improve your German memorization skills. You will find all the memory techniques you need in my books as well as the software to practice these techniques. The edge that the link-word technique has is how a German word is linked to an English word by using matching sounds between the words.

Let me give you an example on how to use these techniques.

English word = cow German word = die Kuh

Picture a pair of mother COWs as they imitate the COOing sound of a dove.

A silly scenario, but it causes your mind to remember the words. It does not even have to be exact. Focus on the sounds created when pronouncing German words, for it is the key to the link word technique.

More e-mails to come… Please watch your e-mail.

A NOTE FROM NATHALIE & CLAUDETTE

Dear Reader,

Nathalie is spending some time in Lake Tahoe for a family reunion. Little Catherine was anxious to wear her snowsuit and snow boots before leaving and would have worn them all day long if Mommy had let her! It was hard for her to understand that it’s not the most comfortable outfit in 75 degree weather.

Claudette made it back to New York City after a fun and relaxing week with Nathalie in Death Valley National Park. Besides working on upcoming projects for SpeakEZ, she got to see a few of the sights and wind down at the pool in the afternoons. We posted pictures on the SpeakEZ Blog!

Translation At The Speed of Light

The days of flipping through the pages of a foreign language dictionary are over. If you haven’t bookmarked an online dictionary yet, now’s the time! Today’s article presents you with advanced versions of online dictionaries. One of them you can even take with you to any website published in a foreign language. All you have to do is highlight, right-click and voilà! You have a translation within seconds. Make the best of it! To Your Language Learning Success,

Nathalie & Claudette

FEATURE ARTICLE

Reading Online In A Foreign Language? Translation Magic At Your Fingertips! by Nathalie Fairbanks

My friend Elaine asked me to translate a comment that someone had submitted to her YouTube account in German. Although her German is very good and she understood what the person was basically saying, a few of the nuances escaped her. Since it was a critique of her performance (she’s an incredible musician http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search _query=ecompar one&aq=f), she wanted to understand every detail of it.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, reading something online in a foreign language, here are two great tools to help you out:

1. Translate a whole web page or single words within seconds!

Depending on how overwhelmed you are with all the new vocabulary, translating the whole web page can be a good idea. You’ll get a chance to read it in somewhat “broken” English and get the jist of what’s on there.

If you’re learning that language, you’ll obviously want to go back and re-read the content in the new language. If you’re fairly familiar with the foreign vocabulary, translating single words might do the trick.

How do you get a whole web page translated? It’s easy!

Go to http://www.humanitas-international.org/newstran/mo re-trans.htm

You’ll find all the popular translation machines in one spot. You can either translate single words or expressions, or have them translate a whole page. The bonus: it won’t cost you a dime!

What I like about this site is that you have a chance to compare translations. Admittedly, machine translations can’t match translations reviewed by a real person. Therefore, if you’re not sure about a phrase, input it into several of the translators and see what results. My personal preference is the google translator (http://translate.google.com/translate). I was actually quite impressed with the quality of translation when compared to the other options.

You’ll find that some of the translations are quite comical, some make no sense at all, and a surprising number are right on the dot. However, as a language learner, how would you know? Look at it this way: it may not be a better translation than what you’d get if you looked up all the words in a dictionary, but it’s a heck of a lot faster!

2. Translate as you go WITHOUT leaving the web page you’re on!

I saved the best for last.

Have you ever been online reading content in a foreign language and come across the same word you didn’t know five, ten, fifteen times in a row? And then thought, “I don’t want to go through the trouble of switching windows, typing in the word and wait for the translation–I’ll just keep reading?”

I’ve got the answer for you!

It’s a little tool called gTranslate that you can install as an add-on to your Firefox browser. It allows you to go to any foreign language web site, use your mouse to highlight the word or phrase you don’t understand, right-click, and get the translation immediately. It doesn’t get better than that!

It’s easy to do even for non-techies like myself (and doesn’t cost you anything). Here’s how:

a. If you don’t use Firefox yet, start by installing it. It’s just like Internet Explorer or Safari.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

b. Then go ahead and download the add-on gTranslate (takes less than two minutes):

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox /addon/918#reviews

You can translate from just about any language to English. There are a few languages that you can translate to French and German as well.

Now, go browse the internet in your favorite foreign language. Enjoy!

[See Customer Testimonials Below]

I’ve been telling you for a while how good Visual Link Spanish(tm) is - that it’s the best course out there on the market, that other courses teach you a lot of words, but you never really learn to speak in sentences and converse like you do with Visual Link Spanish(TM). There are also other courses that speak too fast or that try to teach you by immersion (Spanish only) which can be frustrating and cause learner’s burnout. Even though I’m telling you our course is the best one out there, you do have to realize of course that I’m biased - I created the course.

However, the proof is in the pudding. To help you make your decision to order the course, I’ve included testimonials from people just like you with a desire to speak and converse in Spanish. Of the hundreds of testimonials we get on a regular basis, it was really hard to limit them to just a few so they could fit into this email, but I’ve tried my best.

The course is available through this email-only offer at the low price of only $89.99! When you’re ready to order, copy the following link below into your browser.

Hi Reader

This is Dave from learn-spanish-program.com

Here is another Spanish lesson.

The best way to memorize Spanish words is by using memory techniques. You will find all the memory techniques you need in my books as well as the software to practice these techniques. The edge that the link-word technique has is how a Spanish word is linked to an English word by using matching sounds between the words.

Let me give you an example on how to use these techniques.

English word = cabbage Spanish word = col

Try to picture a CABBAGE as it blooms beautifully into a COAL-colored vegetable.

A silly scenario, but it causes your mind to remember the words. It does not even have to be exact. Focus on the sounds created when pronouncing Spanish words, for it is the key to the link word technique.
