The amount of daily study which one can safely give to language depends on many personal considerations. In general terms it is right to study as long as you are interested. When interest flags, good work cannot be done. The secret of good work is attention, and one may stay at work as long as he can concentrate his attention. Some years ago a gentleman reported in the “Independent” that he followed his two small girls one whole day and recorded their every utterance. Tabulation indicated that each had made 15,000 word-utterances. If we allow one hundred words to the minute, this will mean that each child talked and listened for two and one-half hours. It is safe to say that if anyone will give this much time to language study, speaking for two and one-half hours words that are largely familiar, but interspersing daily ten new ones, and listen for the same length of time to some other’s speech, he is sure to master the language.

Though French and Italian and Spanish are printed in the familiar Roman letters, no English-speaking person can at first sight read those languages intelligibly to a native of those countries. He must first give much study to the problem of how to pronounce them. If the human race is a unit, as the Bible teaches, and science corroborates, we should expect to find similar characteristics in mind and in body. Actually, we do find the same organic structure in the bodies of the races of men, and since their minds run along the same lines, it is assumable that the psychology of other races will in other instances show in their thought-expression this same unity.
